Downey High School received a new air conditioning unit Tuesday. The school also received a new coat of paint.

The air conditioning was part of a two-year, $13.8 million plan to modernize the 57-year-old Modesto City Schools campus. Schools are eligible for modernization funds from the state after 25 years.

When students and staff return next month, every classroom will be air-conditioned.
